Nornickel’s ruthless business model and the responsibility of German corporations

German corporations must demand that Russian extractive company Nornickel respect indigenous rights and environmental standards – or end business deals

After more than 21,000 tons of diesel leaked from a power plant tank in May 2020, causing the largest oil spill in the Russian Arctic to date, the company responsible, Nornickel (Norilsk Nickel), had to pay Russia’s highest fine to date.

In the satellite image, diesel oil spilled in the Ambarnaya River on May 31, 2020 is easily recognizable by its red color.

But this is still a long way from repairing the damage, let alone addressing the causes. Weiterlesen

Controversial arms exports, climate protection and dividends despite short-time working: Our questions to Rheinmetall

Questions on dividend and appropriation of net income:

  • Last year you made use of short-time working, but now you want to distribute a dividend of 2.00 euros per share and thus 86 million euros in total. In your dividend policy, have you taken into account the current situation with regard to short-time working allowance, that this is currently de facto tax-financed and therefore more of a state aid in the Corona crisis than an insurance benefit?
  • In your annual report, you state that you have saved personnel costs of 33 million euros through short-time working. According to trade union information, unlike the majority of other companies in the sector, you have not topped up your employees’ short-time allowances.

Agenda item 2: Adoption of a resolution for the utilization of the unappropriated earnings

The recommended utilization of the unappropriated earnings shall be rejected.
Reasoning: The utilization of the unappropriated earnings has to take the consequences of copper mining and copper production into account. Copper production pollutes the environment and harms the health of the population in mining regions and at the copper smelter sites. By forgoing a dividend, the shareholders can contribute to mitigating the ecological, health, and social damage brought on by copper production. Aurubis AG’s unappropriated earnings from the past fiscal year shall not be used to pay out a dividend of € 1.30 per no-par-value share (€ 56,756,739.00 in total). Weiterlesen

Support for climate and environmental offenders: our countermotion

The Association of Ethical Shareholders Germany proposes that ratification of the acts of manage-ment of the Management Board be refused.

Re agenda item 5: Resolution on the discharge of the members of Uniper SE’s Management Board for financial year 2019

Ethical Shareholders Germany moves not to discharge the members of the Management Board.

Reasons:
The Management Board of Uniper SE does not meet the requirements of the Paris Climate Change Convention and the UN’s guiding principles for business and human rights. Uniper’s central business model, power generation using the fossil fuels coal and gas, makes a decisive contribution to climate change.

Datteln IV: Adherence to power plant highlights problems of relying on coal-fired power generation

Declaration in Solidarity with Russian Environmental NGO Ecodefense

45 NGOs from around the world stand by our friends in Russia. Stop the criminalisation of human rights and environment defenders!

Ecodefense is one of the oldest environmental groups in Russia, founded in 1989 in Kaliningrad. It works in various regions of Russia including Moscow, Kaliningrad and Siberia (Kuzbass) and has already successfully stopped nuclear power plants and coal mines.

In 2014 the Russian government officially labeled Ecodefense as a “foreign agent”, because the organisation convinced a number of investors from Europe not to invest in a nuclear plant near Kaliningrad, which stopped the plant’s construction in mid-2013.

The Russian Ministry of Justice initiated 28 legal (administrative) cases against Ecodefense for non-compliance with the law, leading to fines totaling Euro 30,000, which the organization did not pay until now. Weiterlesen
